The video shows a simple example of an application that evaluates the recordings of a surveillance camera in order to identify people and objects. People, tables and chairs are detected. Lamps are linked to each person in the room. These lamps are switched on when the person moves. A task that would have been very difficult to solve with conventional movement-detectors.

What the viewer cannot see on the moody video is the connection to LCN (Local Control Network), the building management system of Issendorf from Hanover. The behaviour of the users recorded by the camera has a direct influence on the actions in building management. The LCN system can gather the following sensor data:

  • Lighting conditions
  • Temperature
  • CO2 indoor air quality
  • Motion detector
  • Weather data, wind speed, rainfall, temperature
  • Electrical actuators can be used to switch electrical equipment directly.  

Machine learning on the basis of image recognition (video data), control actuators and sensor data can reduce the energy consumption of a building by systematically obtaining data from the (apparently unpredictable) user behaviour and using them to suggest savings.

Energy optimisation is a challenge for the commercial industry. The potential of machine learning for energy optimization was recognized by Google several years ago. 

In these surroundings, the multitude of possible device combinations and their target values make it difficult for planners and operators to determine where the optimum efficiency of a facility lies.
In an ongoing production process, it is difficult to establish the optimum mechanical and electrical equipment and software and their control strategies and setpoints due to the many possible combinations of a facility. Testing each individual combination of characteristics in order to maximise efficiency is impractical.
